Poppets Pre-School

Poppets Pre-School Newsletter October 2016

It has been lovely to welcome our new families to Poppets and to see our big children being so caring towards our new friends.

I thought a newsletter may help everyone to keep up to speed with events, activities and general Poppets information.

Firstly Thank You for your enthusiasm and feedback on Tapestry we love to see what the children do at home with yourselves. Please contact Jo@poppetspreschool.co.uk or let us know if you have any queries or difficulties regarding your child’s Tapestry account.

Don’t forget to visit our web site too: www.poppetspreschool.co.uk where you will find lots of early years information and ideas to extend learning at home.

Key workers and myself are happy to discuss your child’s progress with you at anytime. We believe an exchange of information is the best way to support children and to meet their individual needs. Several parents have already been in to complete their child’s two year old review with us. You are all most welcome to make an appointment with your child’s Key Worker or myself at any time if you would like to do so.

The Golden tree: You may have noticed this if you peep in our window! We use golden eggs and super worm awards to acknowledge, promote and reward positive behaviour. The children then hang their award on the golden tree for everyone to see. Please share with us events at home that you consider worthy of recognition.

Helping hands: All children have made a handprint which we laminate and keep at group. Each day 2 children are chosen to be our “ helping hands” for the day. This is proving a very popular strategy to boost children’s self esteem, help learn each other’s names and for children to feel part of the group...please be reassured if your child has not yet been chosen they will be very soon.

Did you know we also have SUPER-HEROES of Play at Poppets? These are children who have worked hard at sharing, tidying up, or have great play ideas! From next half term children will be able to borrow the Superhero box (ALL children will have a turn, we keep a list!)

We are proud to support St Mark’s school in Uganda. Please see our website for more information and the display board of “hello hands”. Shifra ( a persona doll) has come to England to join Poppets from our link school . The children will soon be (re) introduced to Shifra. The aim of persona dolls is to help children to understand and value difference. Shifra is very much a new girl at Poppets rather than a dolly, she will sit at the table with us for snack and join in with our activities. I will post a picture of Shifra on Tapestry to introduce you...I am sure she will be getting up to lots of adventures!

Outdoor play As the colder weather approaches please could you help us by naming your child’s coat/ jacket /fleece /wellies and shoes, we struggle trying to match child to coat or shoes where clothing is unnamed. We have invested in waterproof trousers for all the children to enable us to play outside even when the sun is hiding!

Snacks and lunch You will see our morning snack menu is posted on the wall by the children’s names. Thank you for supporting our healthy eating ethos at lunchtimes by remaining “sugar aware” Even some of the children’s “healthy label” treats can contain a lot of sugar. Please note young children should not be given whole grapes or cherry tomatoes as these are a HIGH level choking risk. Kindly cut these in half if you wish to include them.

Recycle At Poppets we encourage children to recycle, could you help us by saving MILK bottle lids for our charity collection? bringing in used cereal boxes, and kitchen roll tubes for modelling, clean yoghurt pots, discarded greetings cards for cutting and sticking, bows from parcels etc......does anyone have access to scrap paper? We promise you’ll get it back in a revised format!!

Funding Commences the term after your child’s third birthday unless you have a 2 year olds “golden ticket” (this commences the term after your child’s second birthday). It is a REQUIREMENT prior to claiming funding that we verify your child’s date of birth by seeing their birth certificate..if you haven’t already done so please screenshot this over or bring it in so we can verify your child’s date of birth.

Curriculum ..... We are currently enjoying the books Going on a Bear hunt, The Gruffalo and Stick man. From the children’s enthusiasm we can tell they are favourite “ at home” stories too! We are working as a team to create a story display board of Going on a Bear hunt, trying to remember what comes next as well as thinking of different endings. We think the bear looks so sad because the children didn’t want to play with him and that really he is a very kind bear with gentle hands...just like our Poppets children. ( We have invented our own sequel to this book!)

Our focus for next half term is difference and change :

Children have opportunities to explore and question looking at change in the natural world, we are planning more outdoor adventures in the Autumn sunshine using natural materials to create bug and fairy homes in the garden. We shall also consider how we are all different but special and unique. We continue to celebrate individual achievement and kindness, modelling that by working together we achieve more..

There will lots of glittery surprises too as the term progresses.................and new songs to learn!!

Children in Need Day Friday November 18th see poster for details of fun to be had including a bring and buy cake sale and dressing up days. Why not download a picture of Pudsey Bear and enter our colouring competition?

Christmas Nativity Friday 9th Dec 10a.m -12noon All Poppets children are included in our traditional Christian Nativity and Christmas songs on stage in the Regent Centre theatre. It is not our intention to cause offence. Please speak to Lynn if you would prefer your child not to take part.

Children to be brought to Poppets at 10.00a.m for 10.30 a.m. approx start time, soft shoes would help and please take coats home with you. Costumes are supplied by Poppets, children are allocated a part on the morning, choosing which character they would like to dress up as, no rehearsals take place, it does work BUT a good imagination required. There is plenty of room for lots of family and friends to come and watch our little stars. Everyone is welcome.

There is no “ticket cost” however we invite each member of our audience to donate a food item ( toiletries/ tissues/ toilet roll / soap powder etc also needed) to the Christchurch food bank (please bring on the day) wouldn’t it be lovely if lots of families in crisis were helped at this special time of year.

The raffle Could you help by donating a raffle prize? We like to hold a child and adult raffle, is there an unwanted gift in the back of a cupboard somewhere? The proceeds from the raffle are spent on toys and equipment for your children and is our ONLY fundraising event for the group.

Children’s Party Wednesday 14th Dec 10.30 – 12noon All Poppets children invited arrive at Poppets at 10.30a.m Party games, snack, then hopefully a visit from Father Xmas. Party food supplied by Poppets. Please collect your child at 12.00 noon
