Poppets Pre-School

Poppets Pre-School Newsletter November 2015

Can you believe the first half term has flown by already? We hope you all had a great half term break!   I thought a newsletter may help everyone to keep up to speed with events, activities and general  Poppets  information.

Important  NOW is the time to register your child for your choice of school if they are due to start in Sept 2016.

Thank you for your enthusiasm and feedback on Tapestry we love to see what the children do at home with yourselves.  Please contact Jo@poppetspreschool.co.uk  or let us know if you have any queries or difficulties regarding your  child’s Tapestry account.

Don’t forget to visit our web site too:  www.poppetspreschool.co.uk where you will find lots of early years information and ideas to extend learning at home.

Key workers and myself are happy to discuss your child’s progress with you at anytime. We believe an exchange of information is the best way to support children and to meet their individual needs.    Over the coming half term you are invited to meet with your child’s key worker if you wish to do so. Please see individual key workers to make an appointment.

Have you had a chance to see our Super worm wall display? We were delighted with the children’s enthusiasm for this story and their awareness of what makes a good friend. Some of our children have even received a Superworm award to hang on our tree.  Staff use these to acknowledge, promote and reward positive behaviour. Please share with us events at home that you consider worthy of recognition, and ask your child to show you our golden tree.

Many of the children have  been selected as a “helping hand”  This is proving a very popular strategy to boost children’s self esteem, learn each other’s names and help children to feel part of the group...please be reassured if your child has not yet been chosen they will be very soon.

Did you know we also have SUPER-HEROES of Play at Poppets? These are children who have worked hard at sharing, tidying up, or have great play ideas!  From next half term children will be able to borrow the Superhero box...this year we have an added surprise for you!! . (ALL children will have a turn, we keep a list!)

We are proud to support St Mark’s school in Uganda. Please see our website for more information. Shifra ( a persona doll) has come to England to join Poppets from our link school . The children have already been introduced to Shifra, whom they have decided is 2 years old and lives in my house. The aim of persona dolls is to help children to understand and value difference. Shifra is very much a new girl at Poppets rather than a dolly, she sits at the table with us for snack and joins in with our  activities.  I will post a picture of Shifra on Tapstry to introduce you...I am sure she will be getting up to lots of adventures!

Spanish at Poppets

We are very grateful to Joanna Mc Donald for her Friday morning visits to teach the Poppets children simple Spanish...children are already counting confidently 0-5 and extending this to 10.   Next half term we are looking at colours.

Outdoor play

As the colder weather approaches please could you help us by naming your child’s coat/ jacket /fleece /wellies and shoes, we struggle trying to match child to coat or shoes where clothing is unnamed.  We have invested in waterproof trousers for all the children to enable us to play outside even when the sun is hiding!

Snacks and lunch

Thank you for  your continuing support of  our healthy eating ethos at lunchtimes and for your positive feedback on our snack menus.  Please remain “sugar aware “ some of the children’s “healthy label” treats can contain a lot of sugar.  Please also be aware young children should not be given whole grapes or cherry tomatoes as these are a HIGH level choking risk please cut in half if you wish to include these.

Recycle

At Poppets we encourage children to recycle, could you help us by saving MILK bottle lids for our charity collection? bringing in used cereal boxes, and  kitchen roll tubes for modelling, clean yoghurt pots, discarded greetings cards for cutting and sticking, bows from parcels etc......does anyone have access to scrap paper?   We promise you’ll get it back in a revised format!!

Christmas Charity  Shoe box appeal

You are invited to donate an item to help us fill a shoe box for this charity appeal. Packing up and sending a shoe box gives us the opportunity to encourage children to think of others less fortunate then themselves. Please see list on wall for items to be included.

Funding

Commences the term after your child’s third birthday unless you have a  2 year olds “golden ticket” this commences the term after your child’s second birthday.  It is a REQUIREMENT  prior to claiming funding that we verify your child’s date of birth by seeing their birth certificate..please screenshot this over or bring in so we can take the info we require.

Curriculum   .....       Our focus for next half term is difference and change :

We will be giving the children opportunities to explore and question looking at the natural world, changes to the trees;  making bird feeders; exploring light and dark and thinking of nocturnal animals, Sciences testing ideas and finding out what if....; change to quantity by adding or subtracting;  celebrating differences between  ourselves, and  recognising achievement.                                                Encouraging children to write for a purpose...labels, cards  and  lists, numerals for our shop, using books to find out information  and to enjoy.

There will lots of surprises going on too as the term progresses.................and new songs to learn!!

There is no “ticket cost” however we invite you all to donate a food item ( toiletries/ tissues/ toilet roll / soap powder etc also needed) to the Christchurch food bank (please bring on the day) wouldn’t it be lovely if lots of families in crisis were helped at this special time of year.                    There is plenty of room for lots of family and friends to come and watch our little stars.  Everyone is welcome.
